The Goddess of Beauty and Love

The young woman has just got out of her bath and is not yet dressed. Her hair is hidden under a cap. Originally, she was supporting her lost left arm on a pillar and was looking at herself in a mirror held in her right hand. The even sweep of her body invites you to circle the figure and behold it from all sides.

Who is this woman standing here before us in perfect beauty? Is she a mortal or maybe a goddess?

To us, her torso resembles a modern study of a nude. Its particular appeal lies in its timelessness. But a work of art in the ancient world was not conceivable as a pure study. Standing before us is Aphrodite herself, the goddess of beauty. The gaze of the ancient beholder was not guided by voyeuristic lust but by the worship of the almighty power of love.

The bronze statuette, which is little more than 24 cm high, is a masterpiece of Hellenstic bronze art. It dates back to around 100 BC and was found in Veria in the region of Macedonia in northern Greece. The back of the figure in particular, which is less severely corroded, reveals its outstanding quality. The eyes and the details of the cap were inlaid in silver and thus contrast with the bronze surface, which originally shone like gold.
