Dionysus - divinely drunk

Barbara Greese as a guest in the Collections of Classical Antiquities

"I sing of Dionysus" is the title of Homer's poem. It tells of the birth and growth of the young god, who first has to secure his place in Olympus. He succeeds with his gift - wine. Intoxication and liberation, madness and joy, destruction and inspiration, ambivalent and multiform are the faces and effects of the god, who at the same time appears as a human being. The story is about Dionysus, the god of wine, god of transformation and theatre, with his special connection to the poets. Hölderlin and Nietzsche in particular have shaped our modern reception of the ancient myth of the Dionysian. Reading from Dionysus - a selection of texts through the millennia, from Homer to Borchert.
