Network Antiquity in Bavaria

Special at the RömerMuseum (Weißenburg)

Laufzeit: 15th March 2023 - 29th May 2023
location:
 RömerMuseum Weißenburg

After the stops at Munich, at Eichstätt, Kempten and Augsburg museum network "Antiquity in Bavaria" now presents itself in another joint special exhibition in Weißenburg. Selected objects in the Roman Camp at Zeughaus provide an insight into the respective themes that are in the focus of the individual houses. Afterwards, the exhibition will continue its tour through Bavaria.

The network emerged in 2019 from the "Museums & Tourism" project of the State Agency for Non-State Museums in Bavaria in cooperation with Bayern Tourismus Marketing GmbH. It is one of ten selected pilot museum networks. It was founded with the aim of using a wide variety of media to draw attention more efficiently to common themes and supra-regional references concerning archaeology in Bavaria. "On the trail of the Romans, Celts, Greeks and Etruscans" is the overarching motto of the seven institutions in Augsburg, Aschaffenburg, Kempten, Manching, Munich and Weißenburg. With high-profile activities such as special exhibitions, joint websites via their own homepage www.antike-in-bayern.de), a Facebook presence (www.facebook.com/antikeinbayern) and Instagram network (#antikeinbayern), as well as storytelling in national media, the aim is to whet the appetite of locals and tourists alike for ancient history and archaeological legacies in Bavaria.

Whether as an excavation, a reconstructed archaeological park or a museum collection: Romans and Celts, just like Greeks and Etruscans, have left many traces in Bavaria. Coins, painted clay vessels, valuable gold jewellery, marble sculptures, friezes and even ships tell exciting stories of Bavaria's ancient past. The aim is also to make clear which current references can and must be made with a view to the ancient past. In times of the Corona pandemic and the Ukraine war, democracy is being put to the test, a political achievement that we owe to the ancient Greeks. Only through a strong network, consisting of smaller and larger institutions, can common issues be successfully dovetailed and effectively presented across institutions and regions. It is well known that networking helps to position oneself better collectively. It is becoming apparent that more people are travelling after the Corona crisis than before. That is why the network wants to make it possible to experience antiquity in Bavaria not only digitally but also physically through the special exhibition, but also through a future joint travel guide and concrete travel offers.

The following seven Bavarian museums of antiquities and archaeological parks are represented in the "Antiquity in Bavaria" network:

  • Augsburg, Römerlager im Zeughaus
  • Aschaffenburg, Pompejanum
  • Kempten, Archäologischer Park Cambodunum
  • Manching, kelten römer museum
  • München, Archäologische Staatssammlung
  • München, Staatliche Antikensammlungen und Glyptothek
  • Weißenburg, RömerMuseum
