Cabinet of Curiosities and Antiquarium

The Early Antique Collections of the Wittelsbach Family The beginnings of an antique collection in Bavaria traces back to Duke Albrecht V. Under his successors large parts of the collection were lost as a result of war. The most important addition to the Munich Collections of Antiques up until that time was made by Prince Elector Carl Theodor, who brought his Mannheim collection with him to Munich. Although his successor, the later King Max I, had no interest in antiquities, further additions were made to the collection during his reign following the secularisation of church property in 1803.

The exhibition illustrates the history of these collections and illuminates the most important collectors and the changeful fate of individual items.
