The ancient artworks collected in the Antiquities Collections and the Glyptothek are among the finest to be found in museums worldwide. The foundation of the collection dates back to the Wittelsbach family, among whom the Bavarian Crown Prince and later King Ludwig I stands out for his enthusiasm for antiquity. With his educational approach, he can certainly be considered the founder of a collecting tradition for the two houses on Königsplatz, which aims to make exemplary works of art accessible to all. In the 20th century, other collectors joined this tradition, with James Loeb and Hans von Schoen being two of the most important representatives.
Eva-Maria and Berthold Schneider are impressive proof that this tradition can be continued today. With enthusiasm and expertise, they have built up an exquisite collection of Greek vases and other works of ancient miniature art over many years. Personal preferences have often played a role in their acquisitions. For example, the anointing oil vessel pictured here, dating from around 490 BC, depicts a kithara player using the rare six technique, expressing the Schneiders' love of music. However, what all the pieces in the collection have in common is that they were selected based on a keen sense of beauty and functionality.
The Schneider Collection, which was recently transferred to a foundation, is now being presented to the public in its entirety for the first time. It will later remain in Munich on permanent loan, and the objects will then be systematically integrated into the permanent exhibition of the State Antiquities Collections. We cordially invite you to the exhibition opening. Celebrate with us the beauty of an outstanding collection of ancient art!
